US Treasurer Brandon Beach has urged Americans to purchase newly minted dollar coins bearing President Donald Trump’s likeness and spend them at coffee shops he describes as liberal, saying he wants to see how customers and business owners react.
Beach made the call in a TikTok video published on the US Treasury Department’s official account on Wednesday. He encouraged Americans to obtain rolls of the coins from banks next month and use them to buy coffee at their preferred liberal establishments.
“This is the dollar coin. It will be in the banks next month,” he said in the clip as he removed the coins from a bank.
“And I want to challenge you to go get a roll of dollar coins next month. And then I want you to go to your favorite liberal coffee shop with your top dollar coins. Buy a cup of coffee. Watch their heads explode. They will not like it. But I love it. And I love this president. And I love this coin,” Beach added.
The challenge follows the US Mint’s launch of the Trump-themed coins in September as part of commemorations marking the 250th anniversary of the United States.

The coins were initially offered for sale to collectors through the Mint, with a roll of 25 priced at $61 and a bag containing 100 coins selling for $154.50, according to an earlier report by FOX Business. Both prices are higher than the coins’ combined face value.
Despite being marketed to collectors, the Mint indicated that the coins could also be used for ordinary purchases.
“These coins are also in circulation, so check your pocket change,” the US Mint wrote in a September post on X.
The coins feature Trump’s portrait beneath the inscription “LIBERTY,” with the dates “1776 ~ 2026” displayed below his image. The words “IN GOD WE TRUST” also appear alongside the portrait.
The design commemorates the country’s 250th anniversary, which falls in 2026.
According to the Mint’s product description, the coins were manufactured in Philadelphia with finishes intended for circulation. However, they had not been placed into circulation when they were first made available for purchase.
The coins remain legal tender, meaning they can be used to pay for goods and services despite their initial sale through the Mint at prices above their face value.
Beach’s announcement that the coins would be available at banks next month could provide Americans with another means of obtaining them, beyond buying them directly from the Mint.
However, the Treasury Department has yet to identify the banks expected to stock the coins or clarify whether customers will be able to obtain them at their $1 face value.
The proposed coffee-shop challenge adds a political dimension to the release of the commemorative currency, with Beach openly expressing his support for Trump while encouraging Americans to use the coins in businesses he associates with liberal politics.
