Republicans Break with Trump Over Russian Diesel Deal

President Donald Trump’s announcement of a diesel agreement with Russian President Vladimir Putin has sparked blowback from members of his own party, with Republican lawmakers publicly rebuking the move and introducing legislation to block it.

Trump touted the deal in an October 9 Truth Social post, declaring that Russia would “immediately supply over 300,000 Tons of Diesel Fuel to the American and Global Marketplace.” He said prices for Americans would be “COMING DOWN, IN RECORD NUMBERS, AND FAST.”

The Republican Backlash

Outgoing Rep. Don Bacon of Nebraska declared on X that Trump’s “policies towards Russia and Ukraine are failures.”

“Propping up Putin’s war economy is morally wrong as he uses that money to bomb cities,” Bacon said. “We need moral clarity not moral ambiguity.”

Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick, R-Pa., announced Saturday that he would introduce bipartisan legislation to block all purchases of Russian oil. “It will be called the ‘Ronald Reagan Peace Through Strength Act.’ It will be forced to the Floor via discharge and it will pass overwhelmingly.”

Bacon shared Fitzpatrick’s post and noted, “I’ve already agreed to be an original cosponsor. Congress must make a stand.”

The Bipartisan Opposition

A bipartisan group of senators — including Democratic Sens. Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire, Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut, and Ron Wyden of Oregon, as well as GOP Sens. Susan Collins of Maine, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, Thom Tillis of North Carolina, and John Curtis of Utah — joined together in a statement pressing the administration to “reverse course.”

“Congress explicitly banned Russian energy imports in 2022 to prevent American dollars from financing Putin’s brutal war against Ukraine,” the statement declared. “President Trump’s decision to allow Russian diesel imports to the U.S. runs directly counter to that law. The United States should not provide Putin with a financial lifeline while Russia continues to kill Ukrainian civilians.”

The Skepticism

Former U.S. Energy Secretary Dan Brouillette said Monday on Fox Business that he does not expect the agreement to cause diesel prices to decline significantly.

“If there’s an expectation that prices are gonna come down dramatically as a result of this agreement, I’m a bit skeptical of it,” Brouillette said. “What we’re in essence doing is rearranging the barrels. We’re moving the barrels from one customer to another customer. We’re not producing new barrels of diesel, which is really what the market is expecting and wanting.”

The Bottom Line

Republican lawmakers are breaking with President Trump over his diesel deal with Russia. Rep. Don Bacon called it “morally wrong.” Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick is introducing bipartisan legislation to block Russian oil purchases. A bipartisan group of senators says the deal violates a 2022 law banning Russian energy imports. Former Energy Secretary Dan Brouillette says the deal will not significantly lower prices because it rearranges existing barrels rather than producing new supply.

My Opinion

Trump says the diesel deal will bring prices down “IN RECORD NUMBERS, AND FAST.” His own former energy secretary says that is unlikely. The reason is simple: Russia is not producing new diesel for America. It is redirecting existing barrels from one buyer to another. The total global supply does not change. The price does not fall. The only thing that changes is who gets paid.

And who gets paid is Vladimir Putin. Every dollar spent on Russian diesel is a dollar that funds the war against Ukraine. Congress understood this in 2022 when it explicitly banned Russian energy imports. Trump is now circumventing that law without consulting Congress or offering any legal justification.

The Republicans speaking out are right. Bacon called it “morally wrong.” Fitzpatrick is introducing legislation to block it. A bipartisan group of senators is demanding the administration reverse course. This is what oversight looks like. But it should not take a bipartisan revolt to stop the president from funding an adversary’s war machine. The fact that it does tells you how far the Republican Party has drifted from its own principles.
