The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited -NNPC Ltd. has introduced a mobile application to check crude oil theft and pipeline vandalism in the country.

The cooperation launched the app in Abuja on Friday during the signing of renewed Production Sharing Contracts -PSCs agreements between NNPC and its Oil Mining Leases partners.

The Group Chief Executive Officer -GCEO, Mele Kyari of NNPC Ltd., while talking during the app launch, highlighted the actions of vandals on the company’s pipelines have become a hard task to deal with.

The app titled ‘Crude Theft Monitoring Applications’ was introduced for members of host communities and other citizens to report incidents of oil thieving.

Kyari reported that the cooperation partners were engaged, together with government regulatory bodies, security agencies, and host communities while keeping up a robust framework to curb the menace.

Their ongoing activities of oil thieves and vandals in the oil pipelines and assets are very visible in the fact that illegal refineries are consistently put up in a few locations and insertions into the pipeline network can also be seen.

But Kyari added: “Arrests have been made and illegal vessels have been confiscated by the Nigerian Navy. I commend the Armed forces because they have done commendable work and demolished several illegal refineries within the last three months.”

Kyari also stated that international refineries failing to purchase crude oil from credible sources that are validated by the government will be held responsible.
