Five female athletes from Nigeria have qualified to compete at the 19th World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary, in August of 2019.

Favour Ofili, Grace Nwokocha, and Rosemary Chukwuma are among the five sprinters, along with sprint hurdler Tobi Amusan and long jumper Ese Brume.

The five athletes qualified individually for the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham last August, although Amusan automatically qualifies as the current World 100-meter hurdles champion even though she could have qualified via the entry standard or the wild card she received for winning the Diamond League.

The qualifying window for the Championships included the time frame for the Commonwealth Games.

The women’s 4×100-meter relay team and the mixed 4×400-meter relay team both qualified for the championships, the main World Athletics event, out of the five relay teams.

Following the cancellation of the 2023 World Relays in China due to the COVID-19 pandemic’s reappearance, the two relay teams are successful in earning qualification.

As region champions, three other Nigerian competitors also earned provisional berths at the World Athletics Championships.

They are Chukwuebuka Enekwechi (discus), Oyesade Olatoye (hammer throw), and (Shot Put).

Last June in Mauritius, the trio took first place in their respective events at the 22nd African Athletics Championships.
