A certain Mr. Okonjie Awulo, who is said to be in his late sixties was arrested for Allegedly having forceful and carnal knowledge of a 12 years old minor, in Ogwashi Uku Aniocha South L.G.A of Delta State. He was however granted bail.
According to the grandmother of the girl, Mrs. Felicia Utulu she discovered that her granddaughter was acting funny, so she questioned her, but she ran to her father and confessed that their grandmother’s brother raped her, he tried to bribe her with 500 naria but the pain was too excruciating, she had to reveal the truth to her Father.
She said, “I discovered my granddaughter’s movement and behavior had changed completely and I, therefore, subjected her to questions.
“I insisted to know why my granddaughter was behaving funny but instead of saying something, she ran to her father, and opened up to him about how she was sexually abused by my brother who threatened to kill her if she ever tells anyone.”
The Father of the girl reported to the police, but however the suspect was granted bail, the father of the girl revealed that he didn’t collect can’t money from the suspect and that the money the man paid was for her treatment.
“The N40,000 Awulo paid to the family was part of the money spent at the hospital where my daughter is being treated, we still need more money to treat her.
“I was surprised when my daughter told me that she was raped by her mother’s brother.
“When she told me, I threatened to kill whoever was involved but was advised to report the matter to the Police which I did and quickly went to Police Area command, Ogwashi-Uku, and formally lodged the report” he explained.
When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state DSP Bright Edafe stated that the case was not reported to the police.
He said, “I have called DPO Ogwashi-Uku division and the Ogwashi-Uku Area Commander they said the matter was not reported.”
It is quite disturbing to see that Persons who are supposed to be protecting their young generations are now the ones violating them. The issue of tape cannot be overemphasized, several young children have to live with the trauma inflicted on them through rape.
