Emirates has finalized plans to provide its customers worldwide with more chances to fly better, including new high-speed inflight broadband powered by Inmarsat’s GX Aviation onboard 50 new Airbus (A350) aircraft expected to start service in 2024.
The new agreement will improve the passenger experience by increasing connectivity and worldwide coverage, including flights over the Arctic. The Emirates Airbus A350s will be the first to use Inmarsat’s Global Xpress (GX) satellite network, which powers the world’s only accessible internet network, ensuring passengers can now enjoy uninterrupted global connectivity regardless of location.
Emirates’ passengers will be able to stay connected with family and friends, browse the Internet, and enjoy social media from the comfort of their seats thanks to the
sophisticated high-speed capabilities of the broadband.
In a statement, Emirates’ Chief Operating Officer (COO), Adel al Redha, stated that
providing a world-class onboard experience has always been a priority.
The COO also stated that by utilizing GX Aviation for its Airbus A350 fleet, Emirates is looking forward to exploring ways and solutions to increase connectivity onboard its aircraft.
The improved capabilities given by the upcoming satellites, he said, are especially
crucial since they would increase capacity across the airlines’ worldwide network,
including aircraft flying over the Arctic on flights between the Middle East and America.
The GX network, which would enable Emirates’ in-flight broadband, is currently
comprised of five Ka-band satellites and would be expanded with the addition of seven additional satellite payloads as part of Inmarsat’s fully funded technology roadmap. This comprises two Inmarsat-6s, the most advanced commercial communications satellites ever built, with both sets to enter operation in 2023.
Emirates has also improved connection for Skywards members, including free Internet access throughout the flight for all Skywards Gold and Silver members flying in Business Class, as well as First Class, and Platinum members flying in any cabin class.
