There have been a series of protests in different parts of the country, as regards Naria Scarcity. In Benin there was a backlog of traffic as the Edo Civil Society Group, led by Comrade Agho Ombude carried out a protest over the unnecessary hardship caused by Naria Scarcity, they blocked the entrance of the Central Bank of Nigeria in Benin City.
They accused the CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele of conniving with the Federal Government to cause unnecessary and untold hardship to Nigerians, as most Nigerians are unable to carry out important activities due to Naira scarcity
They also asked that 100, 50 and 20 naira notes be dispensed to Citizens if the New notes are not available and further vowed not to leave the entrance until they are addressed by the head of Central Bank, Benin Branch.
Comrade Agho Omobude later addressed News respondents, according to him, the problem of naira scarcity is tiring and they reached an agreement with the CBN, that 20,000 should be disbursed to each customer, and that the new notes be made accessible to customers both at the counter and the Automated Teller Machine.
Finally the CBN, Benin Branch, also agreed to involve members of the Civil society group in ensuring that money given to banks is disbursed.
He said, “We are tired of the crisis the shortage of the new naira note is causing. People are suffering and we say no to it. We reached an agreement with the CBN to disburse the smaller denominations across the counter with each customer getting N20,000.
They also told us that the new notes should be made available and disbursed across the counter and through the Automated Teller Machines in all the banks.
“They have also accepted to include members of the Civil Society Organisations in the monitoring team set up by the apex bank to ensure monies given to banks are disbursed,” he added”
At this point, it is pertinent to say that, Emefiele’s policy isn’t working as it caused untold suffering to Nigerians, and cash that was always available has been made scarce.
