A work-free day has been declared for civil servants in Kwara today.

The governor of Kwara State, Alhaji AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, has proclaimed today a work-free day for the state’s civil servants in advance of this Saturday’s presidential election.

Moreover yesterday, the distribution of sensitive and non-sensitive materials across the 16 local government areas of the state was started by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in the state.

According to a statement made yesterday in Ilorin by the State Head of Service, Ms. Susan Modupe Oluwole, the work-free day was set aside to allow people to travel to their local polling places and take part in the elections on Saturday.

She consequently urged everyone in the state, especially the civil officials, to carry out their civic duty during the campaigning time without any animosity.

As this is happening, INEC in the state has started distributing sensitive and non-sensitive materials throughout its 16 local government areas.

The INEC Residents Electoral Commissioner, Mallam Garba Attahiru Madami, told reporters in Ilorin immediately after the election materials were sent from the Central Bank of Nigeria, Ilorin zone, that local councils located far from the state capital will be handled first.

He claimed that the Commission had reached agreements to ensure an honest run of the poll.

To be delivered were ballots for the presidential, senate, and house of representatives elections, along with result sheets and collation forms, according to Madami.

Other items, according to him, include the requirements for the number of voters to the political parties as well as the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS).

The state’s people were advised by the INEC Residents Electoral Commissioner to act peacefully before, during, and after the election.

The Director General of the Atiku/Okowa campaign council in Kwara state, Dr. Mahmoud Ajeigbe, spoke on behalf of the other political parties in the state when he praised INEC’s performance at this time.

He added that 218.78 uncollected Permanent Voters Cards (PVC) were returned to CBN till after the polls and urged INEC to ensure free, fair, and credible elections in the state on an equal playing field for all political parties.
