Sierra Leone: Opposition Party Dismisses Presidential Poll Results

Sierra Leone’s major opposition party, the All People’s Congress, has denied the incomplete presidential election results revealing that incumbent President, Julius Maada Bio was leading.

According to APC, there were several irregularities in the vote-counting process.

Recall that tensions have mounted over the outcome of the general elections that took place on Saturday, June 24.

Samura Kamara, the presidential candidate of the All People’s Congress, APC, is President Bio’s foremost rival and opposition.

A conditional results sheet had revealed on Monday, June 26 that Kamara was lagging behind Bio with a little over 800,000 votes, as compared to Bio’s over 1 million votes but this tally did not go down well with Kamara who rejected the partial results on the grounds that there was no transparency and inclusivity in the process.

The occurrence had tallied with the fears in the International observers who had since announced their fears over the non-transparency in the vote counting.

There are fears that further unrest could break out if tensions are not calmed by the time the final results are announced over the next 48 hrs.

This would be unsurprising, and again, not so different from the Nigerian post-election situation. However, unlike in Nigeria, the APC supporters are not likely not wait around for a court case to be concluded, before taking matters into their own hands at glaring case of election malpractice that took place in their very eyes.

And especially not when Kamara has been ‘touted’ as the much-needed ‘saviour’ for Sierra Leoneans.
