Insecurity Reports Spreads Fear In Anambra State

The Anambra State Police Command has been left disgruntled over the recent reports of insecurity in the state. These ‘rumours’ had led to heightened tension amongst residents of the state.

Mr Tochukwu Ikenga, the spokesperson of the command who is incidentally a Deputy Superintendent of Police had revealed this, stating that police officials and other security agencies in the state had heightened patrols in the state, assuring the residents that there was no need for panic.

In his words;

“Today, 7/7/2023, police operatives observed with great dismay, the mischievous act of individuals sharing unfounded security alerts & messages, as well as doctored old videos of security incidents to cause tension & panic in the State.

The Police, with other security forces, have intensified patrols, improved security dominance and surveillance in the state.

“The Command has mentioned the confidence rested on us by Ndi Anambra in the safeguarding of lives and properties shall not be taken for granted.”

To this effect, the Command shall refer relevant cyber laws on persons found wanting in this regard, and deal with them accordingly.”

Reports had been flying on social media about alleged IPOB attacks in Onitsha, Nkpor, Awka and environs. It was purported that the attack had begun in Onitsha from Head Bridge where 2 individuals had been reportedly shot dead by members of IPOB. Panic had then spread to Onitsha Main Market where traders and shoppers alike had begun running for their dear lives on hearing gunshots.

Several residents have speculated that this ‘attack’ had been because the Sit-at-home order had not been obeyed in the state.

As at the time of filing this report, the two deaths and the attack have not been confirmed.

Thankfully, security agents had swung into action swiftly to keep the order in the state.
