About 24 people have reportedly perished in a bus accident in central Morocco on Sunday, August 6.
The crash has now become of the deadliest road accidents, seen in recent times in Morocco, which has a legacy of inadequate road safety record.
According to local authorities, the accident happened in Azilal Province when a minibus toppled over at a curve on its way to the weekly market in Demnate, a small town about 70 miles southeast of Marrakesh.
According to the Associated Press, rescue teams were immediately dispatched to the area, including from Morocco’s Royal Gendarmerie and the Civil Protection, according to The Associated Press.
Meanwhile officials have opened an inquiry into the likely cause of the accident, which is coming after a string of other deadly crashes have happened in that same road.
In August 2022, a bus crash had killed 23 people east of Casablanca.
In 2015, a collision of a semitrailer truck and a bus conveying a delegation of young athletes in southern Morocco killed 33 people.
In 2012, about 42 persons were killed, leaving 24 others injured after a bus careened into a ravine in the Atlas Mountains.
Again in November 2010, 24 people drowned when a bus conveying workmen careened into a river close to the capital city, Rabat.
