Spanish customs agents and National Police made a historic seizure, confiscating a staggering 9.5 tons of cocaine on Friday. This massive drug haul, concealed within a banana freight container originating from Ecuador, now stands as Spain’s largest-ever cocaine interception.
The discovery was made in the port of Algeciras in southwestern Spain, inside a refrigerated container that was initially believed to contain 1,080 boxes of bananas. José Carlos Arobes, a senior official from the Spanish tax agency responsible for customs inspections, confirmed this unprecedented find.
Prior to this remarkable seizure, Spain’s largest cocaine bust had amounted to 8.4 tons in 2018, also discovered within a purported banana shipment in Algeciras.
The tax agency disclosed that the investigation had commenced back in July when authorities received intelligence about an impending delivery of Colombian cocaine through Ecuador in August. The organization orchestrating this shipment had apparently been operating under the guise of a banana exporting company located in Machala, Ecuador.
The intended destination for this illicit cargo was Portugal, with subsequent distribution planned throughout Europe. As of now, no arrests have been reported in connection with this operation.
