Tensions are brewing in Tanzania’s political landscape as the main opposition leader, Tundu Lissu, and several of his top aides found themselves in police custody over what authorities claim was an unlawful assembly.

The country’s largest opposition party, CHADEMA, reported that Lissu and other party leaders were apprehended at a hotel in the Karatu district of northern Tanzania’s Arusha region. According to the party, hotel staff confirmed that police inquired about Lissu’s whereabouts and eventually entered his room forcefully, taking him away without disclosing their destination. CHADEMA further stated that in addition to detaining Lissu, the police also arrested his security personnel and at least two senior party officials.

Arusha regional police commander Justine Masejo responded by explaining that Lissu and three others were taken into custody for questioning regarding allegations of conducting an unlawful assembly and obstructing police duties. Masejo added that once the interrogations and necessary procedures were completed, further legal actions would be initiated.

Lissu had been using public rallies to voice his criticisms of President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s administration, particularly its management of a contentious ports deal and allegations of human rights violations. It’s worth noting that Lissu returned from exile after President Hassan lifted a six-year ban on political rallies. He had been residing in Belgium since 2020, following his defeat in a presidential election against John Magufuli.

This incident underscores the ongoing political tensions in Africa, where power struggles often take center stage, raising questions about whether these actions serve the interests of the citizens or the leaders themselves.
