A Spanish court has officially ruled that John McAfee’s passing was indeed a suicide, as disclosed in a court document obtained on Friday. This verdict marks the conclusion of an investigation into the demise of the renowned software entrepreneur.

John McAfee, renowned for introducing the world’s inaugural commercial antivirus software in 1987, was discovered deceased at the age of 75 on June 23, 2021, within his prison cell. This somber event transpired mere hours after Spain’s high court granted authorization for his extradition to the United States, where he faced charges of tax evasion. The British-American tech luminary had been confined to the Brians 2 penitentiary in the vicinity of Barcelona for eight months, following his arrest after evading U.S. authorities for an extended period.

Although the initial autopsy had ascertained his demise as a suicide, his family had pursued an appeal, seeking a more thorough investigation into the circumstances of his passing. Consequently, McAfee’s body had remained in a Barcelona morgue, pending the resolution of the court proceedings.

The ruling, dated July 24 but released only recently, asserted, “There is not a single element of suspicion, of a charge against a third party, of criminal behaviour.” At the time of this announcement, McAfee’s family had not provided an immediate response to requests for comment. Importantly, it’s worth noting that this ruling cannot be subject to further appeals in an ordinary court.
