Dr. Naeem Dalal, the Advisor for Non-communicable Diseases, Injuries and Mental Health at the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, has pointed out that suicide rates are higher among males than females in the African continent.

At the International Conference on Public Health in Africa, which was held in Lusaka, Zambia, Dr. Dalal had given this commentary on Tuesday during a parallel session prioritising the youth mental health, according to NAN.

Dr. Dalal had emphasized the need to put an end to cultural stereotypes that impede African men from receiving emotional and mental health assistance when needed.

Dr. Dalal had additionally pointed out the importance of countering cultural stereotypes, since figures and extensive research has demonstrated that a greater number of males on the African continent take their own lives more than the females.

The advisor had further declared that a greater proportion of men were committing suicide regularly, stressing that it was essential to comprehend two distinct aspects when the topic of suicide is brought up.

“On one end is the passive approach and on the other is the active approach.” Dr. Dalal had emphasised.
