New Year, New You: Learn These Awesome Habits to Live a Balanced Life

With only a few days left till we enter the new year: 2024, we’re all undoubtedly in a resolution mood. If you’re like me, you’ve probably written down a list of things you want to adopt/ditch in the coming year, and you’re hoping you stick to them this time around. It’s okay, though, if you’re yet to make up your mind on what you want to do differently in the New Year.

One thing is for sure, we all want to lead healthier, happier lives in 2024. To do this, we have to begin now to make preparations for that. Believe it or not, we’re all products of our habits, whether good or bad. It’s in our daily routines, the little things we do and the choices we make.

If you’ve made up your mind to improve your life in the coming year, then you could do with a tip or two, -or five! to nudge you in the right direction. I’ll be highlighting some healthy habits you can adopt to change your life for the better.

Hold up, I know this can seem daunting but if you consider the benefits of writing down your thoughts every day then you’d know it’s worth it. Journaling can help track your personal growth, boosting your memory and understanding your emotions better.

Regular Exercise:

Listen! I’m always going to advocate for exercising your body regularly. It can be difficult to start doing this, especially if you haven’t tried to before but simply knowing the fact that exercise can greatly improve your health, enhance your mood and increase your energy levels can be all the motivation you need to head to the gym.

Begin Your Mornings with A Light Breakfast:

Begin your mornings with a light breakfast

if you aim to be more productive in the morning then avoiding heavy meals at breakfast is the way to go. Consider taking oats, custard, salads (could be fruits or vegetables), akara (bean cakes), or a small portion of moimoi. You can eat breakfast with whatever is readily available to you at the moment, just keep in mind that it has to be healthy and light.

Avoid Eating After 9pm:

Avoid eating after 9pm

A study by Harvard reveals that late-night eating increases the risk of heart disease by 55% for men aged 45-82. Also, eating late at night tends to make your waistline larger as food doesn’t digest by the time you’re ready to go to bed.

Get Enough Sleep Every Night:

Get enough sleep every night

When you’re young and in your prime, you don’t realise how vital sleep plays in our day-to-day lives. Getting a good night’s rest will help your body fight off illness, manage stress, maintain a healthy weight and think more clearly. Aim to get 8 hours of sleep each night.

Read Something Every Day:

Read something everyday

This is a good habit to incorporate into your daily life and a good way to learn new information, sharpen our brains and challenge our imaginations. Try to spend 20 minutes every day reading.

Practice Gratitude:

Practice gratitude

Gratitude is a mindset. By focusing our attention on the positives in our lives, we can improve our sleep, reduce aggression, improve our mental health and enhance empathy. Gratitude helps us realise that there’s always something to be thankful for, even in tough times.

Lastly, it is important to remember that creating life-changing habits is all about tiny, continuous steps towards a more fulfilling life. Start with one habit and once you’ve mastered it, you move on to the next.
