South Africa’s ruling party, the African National Congress (ANC), is gearing up for a fight. President Cyril Ramaphosa, seeking another term, declared on Saturday that the ANC is going for a “decisive victory” in this year’s elections – the fiercest contest in the country’s democratic history.

Experts are saying the ANC might lose its grip on Parliament for the first time ever, since Nelson Mandela himself led the party to victory in 1994, ending decades of racist apartheid rule.

Ramaphosa, speaking at the ANC’s 112th birthday bash, brushed off the doubters. “They say we’re finished, they say we’ll get trounced,” he boomed to the crowd of over 40,000. “But those folks don’t know the ANC, don’t know its heart.”

He promised an election manifesto next month, laying out the ANC’s plans for the next five years. But let’s be real, things haven’t been smooth. The economy’s been sluggish, the pandemic pushed millions into poverty, and power outages from the struggling state power company Eskom have left folks fuming.

Ramaphosa acknowledged the struggles. “Folks, we’ve messed up on services. Sewage in the streets, no water flowing – that’s unacceptable,” he told the crowd.

But he insisted the ANC is the party to fix it. “We want a big win so we can tackle crime, corruption, and those darned blackouts head-on!” he declared.

Now, about that “big win”... some people are worried things might get messy. Whispers of rigging are swirling, casting a shadow over the whole election. Let’s hope this historic contest stays fair and square, because South Africa deserves nothing less.
