Fed up with skyrocketing food prices and a worsening economy, residents of Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State, took to the streets on Monday in a protest against the current state of affairs.

A Simmering Anger

The frustration was palpable as protestors gathered around the Mokola area, their placards bearing messages like “End food hike and inflation” and “The poor are starving.” Chants filled the air, expressing their discontent with the rising cost of living and unfulfilled promises.

A Sparse Turnout

While the protest was planned for a large turnout, only a handful of individuals showed up initially. Organizers attributed this to communication challenges caused by power outages and fuel price hikes. However, the group later grew to around 100 as they marched towards Sango-UI road.

A Call for Action

Activist Solomon Emiola blamed the low initial turnout on communication issues but emphasized the urgency of the situation. He stated, “This has put everybody in a state of confusion. We don’t know where to go again.” He further highlighted the government’s responsibility towards its citizens, as enshrined in the constitution, and called for accountability.

Demanding Change

Emiola criticized the government’s economic policies, particularly its adherence to IMF guidelines, which he believes have led to the devaluation of the naira. He urged the government to declare a state of emergency on both the economy and security.

The Looming Shadow

The protest, though peaceful, serves as a stark reminder of the growing discontent amongst Nigerians grappling with economic hardship. With the “shege” (suffering) being felt nationwide, it’s a question of when, not if, similar protests erupt across the country.

A Hope for Resolution

As the nation grapples with these challenges, one can only hope that the voices of the people are heard and that solutions are found to alleviate the suffering and bring about a brighter future for all Nigerians.
