The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has entreated the Federal Government to honour and implement the agreement the union agreed with it to prevent industrial action.

The ASUU Coordinator in charge of Kano Zone, Mr Abdulqadir Muhammad, made this remark during a news conference at the end of a zonal meeting on Wednesday in Kano.

He remarked that the issues included renegotiation of the Federal Government–ASUU 2009 agreement, negotiated when the exchange rate to the U.S. dollar was N146 as against the current N1,900.

Muhammad also said the exchange rate has scraped away its salaries by 90%.

He lamented that the Federal Government was not bothered to sign the draft agreement agreed upon with the union after the composition of new leadership of the negotiation committee.

However, Muhammad confirmed that members of the union had gotten partial payment of their seven months withheld salaries, and harped on the need to ensure the complete payment of the remaining balance.

The Kaduna state government was not left out as Muhammad was asked to pay the five-month withheld salaries of the Kaduna State University staff.

While campaigning for the payment of the Earned Academic Allowances and promotion arrears deserted after agreement, Muhammad castigated the dissolution of the Governing Councils of public universities, adding that the action violated Universities Miscellaneous Acts and respective university laws.

He further advocated for a review of the Nigeria University Commission, NUC, Act, to examine proliferation of universities in the country without sufficient provision for funding.
