The cost of cancer treatment concerns both the general population and healthcare providers. Scientists aren’t sitting on their hands when it comes to providing cost-effective cancer treatment. There has been a recent breakthrough at the Tata Memorial Center (TMC) in Mumbai, India, which is dedicated to cancer treatment and research. This cancer treatment has the potential to have a significant effect in the medical field, and it is affordably priced at Rs. 100.

Study of The Discovery

After a decade of research, these Indian doctors at Mumbai’s Tata Memorial Center discovered a cancer treatment medication that prevents cancer recurrence. In an interview with NDTV, Dr Rajendra Badve, a top cancer surgeon at Tata Memorial Hospital and member of the research group, outlined the study’s methodology. Human cancer cells were obtained from tumor tissues and injected into rats, a method known as xenografting. This transplantation caused a tumor in the rats, and several cancer treatment techniques, including chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery, were employed to treat them.

However, during this experiment, doctors discovered that when cancerous cells die, they break down into microscopic bits known as Chromatin particles (cfChPs, or chromosome fragments). In certain situations, these expelled particles can even assist cancer to develop and spread to other healthy chromosomes.

Dr. Badve stated in an interview with NDTV that “to find a solution to this problem, doctors gave pro-oxidant tablets with resveratrol and copper (R+Cu) to the rats”. When R+Cu is administered orally, it produces oxygen radicals’ in the stomach. Oxygen radicals can be a double-edged sword, with both positive and negative consequences.

However, in this experiment, oxygen radicals were taken into the bloodstream and destroyed the chromatin particles, preventing metastases.

Benefits of ‘R+Cu’

The doctors stated that ‘R+Cu’ could prevent cancer from recurring and lessen the adverse effects of cancer treatments like chemotherapy by 50%. It could serve as an effective treatment for lung, pancreatic, and oral cancers.

Future Hope for Cancer Cure

The doctors who participated in this study asked for approval from the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). Once approved, this medicine will be available in the market from June – July. Lastly, the doctor said, “the effect on side-effects were tested on both rats and humans, but the prevention test was done only on rats. It will take about five years to complete the human trials for this. There were challenges during the research, many felt it was a waste of time and money. But today, everyone is happy and excited. It is a big success.”
