The United Nations human rights chief, Volker Turk, has painted a grim picture of Sudan, calling it a “living nightmare” ravaged by war and facing potential war crimes. Speaking in Geneva, he raised serious concerns about the deliberate denial of safe access for humanitarian agencies trying to reach those in need.

Warring Parties Blamed for Blocking Aid, Putting Millions at Risk

Since April 2023, Sudan’s military and paramilitary forces have been locked in a brutal conflict, displacing millions and leaving countless dead. This ongoing war has severely hampered access to essential aid, putting millions at risk of hunger and disease.

Deliberate Denial of Aid – A Potential War Crime

Turk emphasized that blocking access to humanitarian assistance constitutes a grave violation of international law and could even be considered a war crime. He urged warring parties to “open humanitarian corridors without delay” to prevent further loss of life.

Aid Workers Targeted, Supplies Looted, Bureaucratic Hurdles Impede Assistance

Humanitarian efforts continue to face significant challenges. Aid workers have been targeted, supplies have been looted, and bureaucratic obstacles hinder vital deliveries to Port Sudan, the key hub for distributing assistance.

Millions in Darfur Face Starvation with Key Aid Route Shut Down

The situation in Darfur, a region controlled by the paramilitary forces, is particularly dire. An advocacy group for displaced people warned that millions risk starvation due to the Sudanese government’s decision to shut down a critical aid route from Chad.

Half of Sudan’s Population Needs Help, Millions Flee the Country

The crisis in Sudan is widespread and devastating. Half of the country’s population, roughly 25 million people, require humanitarian assistance and protection. Millions have been forced to flee their homes, seeking refuge in neighboring countries like Chad, Egypt, and Ethiopia.

“When Two Elephants Fight, the Grass Suffers”

The ongoing conflict continues to take its toll on the people of Sudan and the region as a whole. As Turk emphasized, the crisis “upends the country” and threatens peace, security, and the well-being of millions. The proverb, “when two elephants fight, the grass suffers,” holds true in this case, highlighting the devastating impact of the conflict on innocent civilians.
