Manchester United clawed their way back into the Champions League race with a hard-fought 2-0 victory over Everton at Old Trafford on Saturday. The win, secured through two first-half penalties, snapped Everton’s winless streak in the Premier League to a staggering eleven games.

The game was all about Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford’s composure from the spot. Both dispatched their penalties coolly, condemning Everton to yet another frustrating defeat.

This win is a massive boost for United’s top-four hopes. They now sit just eight points behind Aston Villa in fourth and just three points shy of Tottenham in fifth. With both those teams facing off on Sunday, United capitalized on the opportunity to close the gap.

The Red Devils were desperate for a win after back-to-back losses to Fulham and Manchester City threatened to derail their Champions League ambitions. Thankfully, Everton’s generosity in the penalty area proved to be the turning point.

Fans might remember Alejandro Garnacho’s stunning overhead kick when these two teams met in November. This time, the young Argentine wasn’t on the scoresheet himself, but his dazzling footwork was instrumental in United’s success.

Twice in the first half, Garnacho drew reckless challenges inside the box, leading to the penalties. First, James Tarkowski lunged in rashly after ten minutes, allowing Fernandes to calmly slot home his eighth goal of the season.

Everton’s struggles in front of goal continued to haunt them. Despite creating a flurry of chances early on, with Amadou Onana and Ben Godfrey even coming close to scoring, they simply couldn’t find the back of the net.

Even when they did manage to test United’s keeper, Andre Onana came up with a spectacular save to deny James Garner.

United doubled their lead shortly after, thanks to another Garnacho-induced penalty. This time, it was Ben Godfrey who brought him down, and Rashford stepped up to convert from the spot. It was his fifth goal in just nine Premier League appearances, a sign of his resurgent form.

Everton’s goalkeeper, Jordan Pickford, did his best to keep the score down, denying Fernandes a brace with a flying save from a free-kick and a low drive.

While Garnacho couldn’t add a goal to his impressive performance, United ultimately didn’t need one. Everton’s toothless attack failed to convert any of their 20 shots, proving to be their undoing.

United’s defense, however, deserves some scrutiny. This was the 16th time in 28 league games this season that they conceded 16 or more shots. Thankfully, Everton’s finishing simply wasn’t good enough on the day.

The Toffees almost gifted United a third penalty in stoppage time when Jarrad Branthwaite brought down Rashford, but the offside flag came to their rescue.

This victory injects much-needed momentum into United’s Champions League chase. While questions remain about their defensive frailties, they’ll take heart from their clinical finishing and Everton’s generosity from the penalty spot.
