Moon Sighted in Saudi Arabia, But Will the Fast Begin in Nigeria?

The Islamic holy month of Ramadan hangs in the balance for Nigerians tonight! According to the Haramain Sharafain in Saudi Arabia, the crescent moon, signifying the start of Ramadan, has been sighted. This means Ramadan 1445 officially begins tomorrow, March 11th, in Saudi Arabia.

But hold on a minute, Nigerian Muslims! While the sighting in Saudi Arabia traditionally influences many countries, the wait for a local moon sighting continues in Nigeria. Muslims there will be glued to pronouncements from the Sultan of Sokoto, the official authority on the start of Ramadan in Nigeria.

Moon Sighted in Saudi Arabia, But Will the Fast Begin in Nigeria?

This annual dance with the moon is a fascinating quirk of the Islamic calendar, which relies on lunar cycles. Unlike the fixed Gregorian calendar we typically use, Islamic months are 29 or 30 days based on the visibility of the crescent moon. This can lead to slight variations in the start and end dates of Ramadan across the globe.

So, will Nigerians raise their pre-dawn meals tomorrow in observance of Ramadan, or will they have to wait another day? All eyes are on the night sky and the official pronouncements – a reminder of the beautiful diversity within the global Muslim community, even as they prepare to enter the holy month together.
