The social media platform, X (formerly known as Twitter) is presently agog with the news of John Cena showing up at the Oscars, on stage in his birthday suit, to present an Academy Award category, accompanied by Jimmy Kimmel, a well-known American TV host.
The actor and wrestler, aged 46, had been totally naked save for an envelope he used to cover his privates, on Sunday at the Dolby Theatre in Los d Angeles to announce the winner of the costume design Oscar to Poor Things, starring actress, Emma Stone.
John Cena had held a large envelope containing the name of the costume design winner over his middle when he went on stage before the host for the evening, Jimmy Kimmel appeared to give him a piece of cloth to wrap around his body.
A video of this ‘comedy skit’ was posted on X by Hollywood Reporters and it has been met with mixed reactions. A lot of X users were of the opinion that John Cena shouldn’t have done the ‘disgraceful act’, especially as he had solidified himself in the entertainment world in America. I can’t help but agree with this line of thought. Gimmicks like this, if necessary are supposed to be left for up-and-coming entertainers and not an OG like Cena.
Kimmel had previously revealed that it was some sort of a nod to the 50th anniversary of the previous “craziest moment” in Oscars’ history when a naked man ran on stage.
What do you think – was this funny or a cheap gimmick? Did the #Academy really need to do this? And with a notable celebrity such as John Cena?
