The Kamba land border, a vital trade route between Nigeria and Niger Republic, has reopened its gates after a period of closure based on the directive of the president, president Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The Kamba border is important because of its significant contribution to Kebbi State’s revenue generation. Strategic Reopening for Positive Impact

The reopening of the border was done by the Comptroller, Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) Kebbi State Command, Iheanacho Ojike, in the presence of district head of Kamba, Alhaji Mamuda Fana, stakeholders, and representatives of other relevant agencies. He made it clear that the primary purpose of the reopening is to facilitate legitimate trade, a move expected to positively impact national development.

Focus on Legality and Security

Comptroller Ojike stressed that the border reopening is not a green light for illegal activity. He assured everyone present that NCS officers are dedicated to ensuring smooth and lawful trade across the Kamba border. This includes ensuring adherence to customs regulations, proper declaration of goods, and payment of appropriate duties to the federal government. He also emphasized the ongoing ban on food grain exports due to domestic shortages.

The reopening was met with enthusiasm by the Kamba community. Mallam Fana, the district head, expressed gratitude to the federal government for this positive step. He acknowledged the renewed hope it brings to residents with interests in cross-border trade, including small business owners. He pledged to work with his community to discourage any attempt at illegal activity.

Collaboration for Continued Success

Comptroller Ojike’s visit extended beyond the border reopening ceremony. He also paid a courtesy call to the Emir of Gwandu, Major General Muhammed Bashir Iliyasu (Rtd). Seeking the Emir’s blessings and cooperation, Ojike emphasized the importance of collaboration amongst traditional leaders, government agencies, and the community to ensure a positive outcome. Working together, they aim to foster legitimate trade, curb smuggling activities, and maintain security within the border communities.

The reopening of the Kamba land border signifies a commitment to economic growth and community well-being. By prioritizing legitimate trade and fostering collaboration, this initiative has the potential to create a thriving border environment that benefits both Nigeria and Niger.
