The Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule had on Friday, ordered a probe into the incident that left two state university students dead and 23 others receiving treatment.
The university had received palliatives from the state government to share to the students to alleviate the effect of the economic hardship.
During the course of this distribution, some students overpowered the security operatives station on ground, leading to a stampede which resulted in the death and injuries of some of the students while they carried away the food items.
Governor Suke had released a signed statement after the tragic incident, expressing shock over the deaths of the students and had promptly directed the authorities of the Nasarawa State University, Keffi and security agencies to commence an immediate investigation into the unfortunate occurrence to reveal those behind it.
Dr. Emmanuel Agbadu Akabe, the state Deputy Governor had also visited the University to gather facts for himself and visited those who sustained injuries.
Recall that Engr. Sule had launched the widely applauded initiative to distribute rice and N5000 cash each to students in all tertiary institutions in the state.
The palliative distribution was a huge success and was peacefully carried out by Federal University, Lafia, Isa Mustapha Agwai Polytechnic, Lafia, College of Agriculture, Science and Technology, Lafia, the School of Nursing, Lafia as well as the College of Education, Akwanga, respectively.
It is too unfortunate that this mishap had fallen on the Nasarawa varsity when it came to their turn. It is apparent that a well-thought plan was enacted towards the palliative exercise, leading to the loss of human lives and several injuries.
