It’s that time of the year again, where our favorite celebs strut their stuff at the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA), hoping to snatch up some shiny trophies. But wait, do these celebs even know what they’re doing? Multichoice Nigeria dropped the bombshell on March 24, unveiling the nominees for the 10th edition of the AMVCA, set to dazzle on May 11, 2024. For those not in the TV groove, AMVCA is like our own African version of the Oscars.

AMVCA: The Glitz and Glamour

Just take a moment to picture the glamorous gowns, dapper suits, and a whole lot of drama. That’s the AMVCA for you – a spectacle where our beloved actors and actresses battle it out not just for awards, but also for the title of best-dressed (even if it means borrowing clothes and getting dragged by designers!).

Turning Tides at the AMVCA

This year, the AMVCA is pulling a plot twist. The organizers decided to shake things up for the 10th edition, with 27 categories up for grabs, including two shiny new recognition awards. But here’s the thing they’re changing the game by ditching the audience voting system for most categories. Say what now? The winners will now be handpicked by a jury of industry big shots, leaving us mere mortals out of it.

Controversy in the Air

And why, you ask? Well, it seems like AMVCA got caught with its hand in the cookie jar last year, with several persons crying foul over some questionable winners. So, they’re switching gears to avoid another PR disaster. How can we trust this new jury system when the nominations themselves feel like a shady deal? Case in point: Timini Egbuson getting a nomination for best supporting actor in Funke Akindele’s film, “A Tribe Called Judah.” Seriously, AMVCA, we see through you!

Sound the Alarm

Oh, but that’s not all. It seems like AMVCA forgot about the heartbeat of cinema – the sound. Award-winning composer Tolu Obanro (aka Tyanx) isn’t having it, slamming the organizers for axing sound-related categories. Seriously, guys, are we watching silent movies now? Sound is what sets the mood, amplifies the emotion, and tells the story. So why the snub, AMVCA?

According to him ” A lot of work actually go into this. First the categories are wrongly labeled and now totally considered not a big deal?;Are we now watching movies without sound? To have that kind of category removed is a killer in the industry in e are hoping to improve on”.

So, my fellow Nigerians, as we gear up for another edition of the AMVCA, let’s brace ourselves for the inevitable drama, the questionable nominations, and of course, the never-ending controversy. Will the AMVCA be riddled with corruption this year? Only time will tell. But one thing’s for sure – it’s going to be a beautiful show and I’m sat!.
