Algeria has strongly condemned France’s decision to fund projects in Western Sahara, a disputed territory. Algerian state media reported on Sunday that the Sahrawi government, which controls parts of Western Sahara, called France’s move a “provocative step.”

Background on Western Sahara

Western Sahara is a region in northwest Africa with a long-standing conflict over its status. Morocco claims sovereignty over the entire territory, while the Sahrawi people, led by the Polisario Front, seek independence. The area has been divided by a UN-monitored sand berm since a ceasefire in 1991.

Understanding the Disagreement

Algeria backs the Polisario Front’s claim to independence for Western Sahara. France, on the other hand, maintains close ties with Morocco. Algeria views France’s decision to fund projects in the territory as siding with Morocco and undermining the Polisario’s cause.
