Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure that improves the size, shape, and symmetry of a woman’s breast. This is usually achieved with the use of breast implants, which are medical devices composed of silicone shells filled with either saline solution or silicone gel.

One prevalent misconception about breast implants is the possibility of them “popping” or “blowing up.” However, present-day implants are carefully designed and tested to endure significant pressure and damage without rupturing. While implant rupture is possible, it is uncommon and is usually caused by major stress, such as a car accident, rather than normal activities.

Implant Materials

There are two main types of breast implants:

  • Saline implant
  • Silicone gel

Saline implants resemble soft bags that are filled with saltwater, which is a bodily fluid that is comparable to tears. Their reputation for safety comes from the fact that, in the unlikely event of a leak, the saline would simply be absorbed by the body, much like drinking a glass of water. Thus, they are unable to truly explode or rupture within the body.

Conversely, cohesive, thick silicone gel is housed inside a silicone shell in silicone gel implants. They are quite safe and made to remain intact even in the event that the shell is broken, so the gel typically stays in place. It behaves similarly to a gummy bear in that it doesn’t flow everywhere when cut.

Implant Rupture

Depending on the anatomy of the patient and the intended result, implants can be positioned directly behind the breast tissue or beneath the chest muscle. Implant rupture occurs when a breast implant’s outer shell tears or punctures, allowing the filler material to seep out.

A rupture may manifest as changes in the strength, shape, or position of the nipples. Ruptures can happen as a result of trauma to the chest or normal wear and tear. Whereas silicone gel implants might not exhibit any clear symptoms, saline implants will deflate if they burst.

In order to correct the size and contour of the breast, surgery is required to remove and replace the implant if a rupture is found and confirmed. It’s important to get routine medical examinations to detect any problems.

How Safe Are Breast Implants?

Rest assured that before breast implants are available, they undergo rigorous testing to verify their safety. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA), a major authority in the United States, establishes guidelines for what materials can be used and how implants are manufactured. They ensure that everything satisfies strict safety standards.

Furthermore, many types of breast implants are safe to use during magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans, which are medically necessary procedures.

However, not all types of implants work with MRI equipment. Before obtaining breast implants, you should consult with your doctor to determine the best options for your needs and potential future medical operations.

Conclusion

In short, breast implants are very safe and don’t just burst unexpectedly. It’s important to talk about any worries with a qualified surgeon. Choosing the right surgeon and following their advice after surgery are key for a good outcome of the implants.
