The Chairman of Nigeria’s Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mr. Ola Olukoyede, has implemented a major restructuring to strengthen the agency’s fight against corruption. This overhaul includes the appointment of a new Chief of Staff, Mr. Michael Nzekwe, and the strategic reconfiguration of the EFCC’s zonal commands.

Nzekwe, lauded as a highly experienced investigator and lawyer, brings a wealth of knowledge to his new role. His diverse career within the EFCC, spanning various departments, positions him as a valuable asset to the Chairman.

The restructuring itself signifies a significant shift within the agency. Each of the 14 zonal commands has been elevated to the status of a department, now headed by a dedicated Director. This move aims to streamline operations and empower regional leadership.

Furthermore, the EFCC’s security unit has been upgraded to a full-fledged department, underlining the importance of safeguarding the agency’s personnel and sensitive information. Additionally, a new department has been established within the Chairman’s office, headed by Mr. Friday Ebelo, to manage special duties at the commission’s headquarters.

These strategic changes, coupled with the appointment of seasoned professionals like Nzekwe, signal a clear intention from Chairman Olukoyede: to optimize the EFCC’s effectiveness in tackling corruption across Nigeria. While the full impact of this restructuring remains to be seen, it undoubtedly marks a significant step towards a more robust and efficient anti-graft agency.
