A mediation session convened in Cairo with the participation of US, Egyptian, and Qatari mediators to discuss a potential ceasefire and the release of hostages between Hamas and Israel. The objective of the session is to facilitate an agreement between Hamas and Israel regarding a ceasefire and a mechanism for releasing Israeli hostages and Palestinian prisoners, with the aim of halting the ongoing conflict

Antony Blinken, the top US diplomat, is urging Hamas to accept the terms proposed by mediators on the war between Hamas and Israel which includes a 40-day ceasefire and the exchange of Israeli hostages for Palestinian prisoners.

Why it matters?

Since the attack on southern Israel on October 7, Hamas and Israel have been engaged in a conflict resulting in significant casualties. The death toll includes 1,170 people, primarily civilians, in Israel, and at least 34,568 people, mostly women and children, in Gaza.

These figures underscore the severity and brutality of the conflict, particularly in Palestinian territories, where thousands have been displaced, and the threat of further loss of life persists.

What are they saying?

Opinions have been voiced regarding stance on the truce proposal put forward by the mediators amid the ongoing war, particularly concerning its impact on Gaza.

Antony Blinken, the top US diplomat, emphasized the importance of Hamas considering the truce, stating, “If Hamas genuinely cares about the Palestinian people and desires an immediate relief of their suffering, it should accept this agreement.”

Hamas official Hindi, speaking on the same matter, highlighted the interest of Hamas and all Palestinian resistance factions to end the ongoing war, which has consumed everything. However, ” it will not be at any cost,” he stressed that the group “cannot under any circumstances raise the white flag or surrender to the conditions of the Israeli enemy”.

Egypt’s Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry urged all parties to demonstrate the required flexibility in order to reach a deal aimed at halting the bloodshed of Palestinians.

However, Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed to send Israeli ground forces into Gaza’s far-southern city of Rafah. Their major aim is to eliminate the Hamas battalion and do not plan to settle for less.

Bottom line

The deliberation of the truce calls for both Hamas and Israel to reconcile their differences and stop the brutal war that have resulted in great losses and also threatens famine in Gaza.
