In a bid to address the housing challenges faced by first-time owners and low-income earners, the Lagos State government has embarked on initiatives to provide affordable housing schemes.

This commitment was underscored by the Commissioner for Housing, Mr. Akinderu-Fatai, during the ongoing 2024 Ministerial Briefing held to commemorate the first anniversary of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s second term in office.

Why it Matters

Recent demolitions of houses in Lagos have heightened dissatisfaction with government operations in the state. The housing schemes initiated by the government demonstrate a commitment to the progress of Lagos and meeting the housing needs of its residents, particularly those who are financially unable to afford decent accommodation.

By focusing on the less financially capable members of society, these initiatives aim to improve sustainability and promote socio-economic rights for all citizens.

The introduction of long-term mortgages further facilitates ease of payment for beneficiaries, enhancing accessibility to housing opportunities. These efforts align with the socio-economic rights that citizens are entitled to enjoy as members of the state, contributing to overall social welfare and development.

What They Are Saying

According to Commissioner Akinderu-Fatai, discussions are underway with private finance institutions to provide 800 housing units in Odola, Ikorodu division.

These initiatives target first-time homeowners and low-income earners, offering mortgages spanning from 10 to 15 years. Additionally, efforts are being made to re-evaluate government-owned old estates, with plans to restore infrastructure and maximize land use for increased home yield.

However, concerns have been raised regarding non-compliance with estate rules by some residents, including non-payment of service charges and engagement in cult activities. The state government has warned that allocations may be revoked for allottees who fail to adhere to the agreed-upon terms.

In a bid to enhance fairness and transparency, the Lagos State Government plans to conduct a balloting exercise for the allocation of housing units. The first exercise is scheduled for June 4, 2024, and will be monitored by independent observers to ensure integrity and fairness.

Bottom Line

The availability of sustainable housing plans in the state is a crucial step towards meeting the needs of its residents. By prioritizing affordable housing schemes and promoting transparency in allocation processes, the Lagos State government is advancing social welfare and fostering inclusive development. These efforts underscore a commitment to ensuring that all Lagosians have access to decent and affordable housing, thereby enhancing overall quality of life and contributing to the state’s socio-economic advancement.
