A group of 14 students from Confluence University of Science and Technology in Osara, Kogi State, have been safely rescued after being abducted by gunmen on Thursday night.

The students were reportedly studying for their upcoming exams when the gunmen, described as bandits, entered the campus through the surrounding bushes. They then burst into three lecture halls, firing shots into the air to frighten the students.

Security Forces Launch Rescue Operation

Following the abduction, a joint security operation involving police officers, local vigilante groups, and hunters was launched to locate and rescue the missing students. A spokesperson for the Kogi State Police Command confirmed that 14 students have been found so far and that the search for the remaining students is ongoing.

Conflicting Reports on the Number Rescued

There are some discrepancies between the reports from the police and the state government. While the police confirmed the rescue of 14 students, a statement issued earlier by the Kogi State government said that “some” of the abducted students had been rescued. The exact number wasn’t specified by the government.

The government attributed the success of the rescue operation to the overwhelming firepower of the security forces compared to the kidnappers. The statement also mentioned that some of the kidnappers were injured during a shootout and managed to escape.

Students Taken to Medical Facilities

The rescued students, along with other kidnap victims who were freed during the operation, have been taken to medical facilities for a checkup and any necessary treatment.

Hunt for Remaining Students Continues

The authorities are determined to find all the missing students. Security forces are combing the nearby areas, and the public is urged to report anyone with suspicious injuries to the nearest law enforcement agency.

Governor Commends Security Forces and Vows Continued Action

The Kogi State Governor, Ahmed Usman Ododo, expressed his appreciation for the efforts of the security forces and local vigilantes in rescuing the students. He reiterated his commitment to ensuring the safety and security of the people of Kogi State.

Governor Raises Concerns About Possible Insider Involvement

In a previous statement, Governor Ododo raised concerns about the possibility of insider collaboration in the abduction. He pointed out that security cameras installed on the university campus were found to be switched off on the night of the attack, suggesting potential involvement from someone within the university. Investigations are ongoing into this possibility.

This is a developing story. We will continue to provide updates as they become available.
