The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has threatened to begin a nationwide strike.

According to ASUU, the plan to embark on strike is to protest against the Nigerian government’s failure to appoint Governing Councils for Federal Universities,

At an ongoing briefing at the ASUU national secretariat in Abuja,
The ASUU President, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, had during an ongoing briefing at the ASUU national secretariat in Abuja, bemoaned the absence of governing councils across all the federal universities in the country among other pressing issues.

Prof. Osodeke had also said that President Bola Tinubu’s administration had been given enough time to meet the academic union’s demands.

Recall that governing councils of the universities were dissolved by the then-newly inaugurated government last May.
The union had also lamented the 35% salary increase for professors and the 25% salary increment for other university academics, tagging it as a wage award that could be terminated by the government at any time.

Why It Matters

The threat of a nationwide strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) carries significant weight, especially given the union’s history of engaging in protracted strike actions in Nigeria.

ASUU’s decision to protest against the Nigerian government’s failure to appoint Governing Councils for the Federal Universities underscores the critical issue of governance and autonomy within the higher education sector. With the absence of governing councils across all federal universities, there are rightful concerns about academic freedom, institutional governance, and effective decision-making processes that need to be addressed and quickly.

Additionally, ASUU’s frustration with the government’s handling of salary increments for the university academics shows the challenges they’ve been put through and raises questions of adequate compensation for lecturers in the country.

This threat of strike action serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing struggles faced by educators and institutions in Nigeria and the urgent need for meaningful dialogue and resolution.

Bottom Line

This threat of strike action is a clear sign that the federal university lecturers and their institutions are facing ongoing problems, and there’s an urgent need for meaningful dialogue and resolution in this issue.
