Months after the 2023 AFCON, Cote d’Ivoire once again proved to be Nigeria’s nemesis, this time denying the Golden Eaglets a spot in the 2024 U-17 African Cup of Nations. The five-time world champions fell 1-0 to the Baby Elephants in the WAFU B U-17 Championship semi-final.

In a tightly contested match at the University of Accra Stadium, Cote d’Ivoire’s Youbah Coulibaly capitalized on a defensive mix-up in the 54th minute to score the game’s only goal. Despite a valiant effort, Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets could not find an equalizer. Goalkeeper Dominic Chinedu made several crucial saves to keep Nigeria in the game, but Cote d’Ivoire’s composure and hunger for the final ticket ultimately prevailed.

The defeat means Nigeria will miss out on next year’s Africa U-17 Cup of Nations, a crucial tournament where Africa’s representatives for the 2025 FIFA U-17 World Cup will be determined.

In the other semi-final, Burkina Faso secured their place in the final with a 2-1 victory over the host nation Ghana. The Black Starlets, three-time world champions, were eliminated at the semi-final stage, with Burkina Faso showcasing superior skill and determination to advance.

The WAFU B U-17 Championship has been a challenging journey for many top teams. Both Nigeria and Ghana, traditionally strong teams in youth competitions, faced tough opposition and will need to regroup and rebuild for future tournaments.

For the Golden Eaglets, this loss is a significant setback, marking a missed opportunity to compete at the continental level and potentially on the global stage. The focus will now shift to development and preparation for the next generation of talent, with hopes of reclaiming their dominant status in youth football.

Cote d’Ivoire and Burkina Faso will now battle it out in the final, with both teams looking to secure the championship and a place in the upcoming U-17 AFCON.
