The Super Eagles’ quest for their first victory in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers continues as they were held to a 1-1 draw by South Africa at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo. Despite an improved second-half performance, Nigeria was unable to secure a win, leaving them with three draws from their first three matches in the campaign.

From the onset, South Africa appeared more composed and determined. Their efforts paid off in the 29th minute when Zwane expertly slotted home to give the Bafana Bafana a deserved lead. The visitors nearly doubled their advantage, but the crossbar thwarted their attempt, allowing Nigeria to escape further damage as the first half ended 0-1.

The Super Eagles, led by new head coach Finidi George, regrouped during the break and returned to the pitch with renewed vigor. Their efforts were quickly rewarded in the 46th minute when Fisayo Dele-Bashiru found the back of the net, capitalizing on a precise assist from Alex Iwobi to level the score at 1-1.

Dele-Bashiru’s promising performance was cut short by an injury, prompting his replacement by Alhassan Yusuf. The substitution brought fresh energy, but despite Nigeria’s persistent attacks and numerous chances, they failed to break through South Africa’s resilient defense.

As the final whistle blew, South Africa’s determination and solid defense earned them a well-deserved draw, much to the frustration of the home fans. The Super Eagles’ inability to capitalize on their opportunities leaves them with just three points from their opening three games, putting them in a precarious position in Group C.

Currently, Lesotho leads the group with five points, while Rwanda, South Africa, and Benin Republic each have four points, leaving Nigeria fifth. The Super Eagles must now turn their focus to their next match against Benin Republic, where they will aim to secure their first win and keep their World Cup hopes alive.

With the pressure mounting, Coach Finidi George will need to rally his team and address the tactical shortcomings that have plagued their early qualifiers.
