Manchester United have secured a deal to sign Joshua Zirkzee from Bologna, opting not to trigger his release clause. Reports indicate that the transfer will see United paying slightly more than the £34m clause, but the fee will be spread over three years.
90min first reported in January that Zirkzee was a target for the Red Devils as they searched for a new striker for the summer transfer window. By season’s end, the 23-year-old Dutch forward had netted 11 goals, playing a crucial role in Bologna’s qualification for the Champions League. His impressive form also earned him a late call-up to the Netherlands squad for Euro 2024.
United intensified their pursuit of Zirkzee early in the transfer window, facing competition from AC Milan. However, the Rossoneri withdrew due to disagreements over personal terms and agent commissions, paving the way for United to finalize the deal.
Renowned transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirmed that Zirkzee will be the first signing of the INEOS era at Manchester United. Zirkzee is set to sign a five-year contract with an option for an additional year, providing much-needed depth up front for manager Erik ten Hag. With Anthony Martial’s contract expiring in June, Rasmus Hojlund remains the only senior natural striker in United’s squad.
Part of United’s appeal in signing Zirkzee lies in his lauded link-up play, which could see him form a potent partnership with Hojlund. The Danish forward, who is two years younger than Zirkzee, also made the move from Serie A to United last summer in a deal potentially worth £72m with add-ons.
Zirkzee’s addition is expected to bolster United’s attacking options and provide ten Hag with greater tactical flexibility as the team aims for success in the upcoming season.
