Alvarez scored the goal that proved enough for Atletico Madrid to complete a 1-0 win at home to Deportivo La Coruna and reduce the gap on LaLiga leaders Barcelona to two points.
The Argentine scored in two games in a row on Saturday, then addressed the talk about his recent comment saying he’d like to play for Barcelona someday.
Alvarez, however, angered Atletico fans when he revealed he wanted to fulfill his dream to play for the Catalan club at the World Cup, 2026. Atletico, in turn, held out to interest from their rivals in the summer transfer window.
The home crowd did not all support the 26-year-old as he was booed off at his own stadium this season, but his latest goal was greeted with praise by some fans at the Metropolitano.

“I want to apologise to our fans for my words during the World Cup. I was mistaken in the words I used and in the timing,” said Alvarez, who added to Movistar Plus.
“I get why the fans are mad. I really do, if I were a fan I’d be mad too. Given how supportive they’ve been ever since I got here.”
The forward also hoped his displays could repair a fractured relationship with the fans.
I hope I can stay calm, make the most of this, and turn things around,” he said.
With the win, Atletico in second place, went 25 points ahead and comfortably led the title race before Sunday’s Barcelona-Real Madrid Clasico.
