Nine bodies were found in stacks of trash at a dumpsite in a Nairobi slum on Friday, prompting Kenyan police to announce the start of an inquiry.

At a police station close to the location of the graphic discovery in Mukuru, south of the capital, police used tear gas and rubber bullets for a brief period of time to scatter an irate mob, according to an AFP reporter.

Witnesses told AFP that men and women’s bodies were uncovered in plastic bags among heaps of debris at the abandoned quarry.

“We need answers from the police because this is something that needs to be investigated right away,” said Lucy Njambi, a Mukuru resident.

“What I witnessed is startling. Bodies were stowed in sacks and discarded near the quarry.” Nairobi Police Chief Adamson Bungei verified the discovery.

“Investigations have been launched to establish the identities and how these people were killed,” he disclosed to reporters.

Bottom Line

This incident highlights significant human rights concerns.

The Kenyan government and international human rights organizations should closely monitor the situation to ensure that the investigation is conducted fairly and that those responsible are held accountable.
