Looming Nationwide Protest: Nigerian Government Schedules Emergency Meeting with Ministers

The Nigerian government has set up an emergency meeting on Wednesday, July 24 in response to the planned nationwide protest slated for August 1, 2024.

This is announced according to a circular signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Cabinet Affairs Office, Richard Pheelangwah, dated July 23, 2024.

The meeting is coming after President Tinubu had through the Minister of Information, Mohammed Idris appealed with Nigerians to halt the planned protest.

The Nigerian youth have scheduled a planned protest in light of the worsening state of things in the country. The core and food inflation have increased to an alarming 34.19% and 40.87% respectively, prompting action from the citizens.

Due to the high rate of inflation, the prices of commodities and the purchasing power of Nigerians have increasingly diminished.

The youths have insisted on a protest despite the recent approval of a N70,000 minimum wage on Tuesday by the Nigerian Senate.

The upcoming protest was inspired by the month-long protest in Kenya which saw citizens clamouring for the reversal of the Finance Act and other anti-policies by the Kenyan Government.

What They’re Saying

The circular was titled, ‘Planned Nationwide Protest and read;
“I am directed to invite you to attend a meeting with the Secretary to the Government of the Federation on the above subject slated as follows: July 24, 2024, Time: 10 am prompt, Venue: Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation Conference Room.”
