France, the Olympic hosts, launched a search for their second gold medal by a convincing 3-0 win at the opening of the group against the United States at the Stade Vélodrome in Marseille. Under Thierry Henry, France found an inspired USA team that would thwart all of their attacking strategies from the very beginning.
The game was finally able to gain some life in the 39th minute after Paxten Aaronson cut inside from the right, firing off a shot saved by the feet of French goalkeeper Guillaume Restes. Just before halftime, France nearly scored after Alexandre Lacazette set up Jean-Philippe Mateta, whose shot from the edge of the box went only inches wide of the target.
After the break, the USA continued to frustrate France, holding a lot of play without really turning their dominance into any clear chances. But France needed just one moment of brilliance, which arrived a little after the hour. Lacazette’s precise long-range shot gave France the lead, bringing the home crowd into life.
The USA almost equalized immediately, but Aaronson’s header was spectacularly saved by Restes. Kevin Paredes then created another excellent chance for the USA, only for John Tolkin’s header to be saved at point-blank range.
France doubled their lead with a stunning goal from the new Bayern Munich signing Michael Olise. The 22-year-old received the ball on the edge of the area, turned, and curled a fantastic finish into the far corner. The USA was reeling from this blow and never recovered.
Loic Bade wrapped up the win with a firm header at a third goal late in the game. France now wants to become the first European nation since Spain in 1992 to win Olympic football gold.
