Ukraine has reacted to Niger’s decision to sever diplomatic ties with Kyiv, following Niger’s solidarity move with Mali, which had earlier cut ties with Ukraine. Ukraine’s foreign ministry labeled Niger’s decision as “regrettable” and criticized it for being based on “groundless and untrue” allegations. Niger’s junta announced the move on Tuesday, citing Mali’s previous break with Kyiv due to remarks by a Ukrainian military intelligence official. The remarks were interpreted by Mali as support for rebels fighting in northern Mali.

The Ukrainian foreign ministry condemned Niger’s action, highlighting that no investigation was conducted into the Mali incident, nor was any evidence provided to justify the severance of ties. The statement criticized Niger for acting without verifying the situation or substantiating the reasons for their decision.

Geopolitical Context

The diplomatic rift is not entirely unexpected, given the strengthening relations between Mali, Niger, and Russia, an adversary of Ukraine. But will have implications given Africa’s reliance on Ukrainian supplies. Both Mali and Niger have been cultivating closer ties with Russia, which is a major player in global regional conflicts but has also provided support through Wagner mercenaries, a private military contractor, to Mali and Niger in their fight against insurgent groups. This strategic support aligns with their broader strategy of bolstering security.

Recent Developments

In July, Tuareg rebels claimed to have killed at least 84 Wagner mercenaries, marking a significant defeat for the group. Wagner, which was heavily involved in the Ukraine conflict until last year, continues to operate in various African countries despite the mutiny and subsequent loss of its leader.

Dispute Origins

The diplomatic rift was triggered by remarks from Andriy Yusov, a spokesperson for Ukraine’s military intelligence, suggesting that Malian rebels had been provided with necessary information for their attacks. Ukraine has refuted any claims of supporting “international terrorism,” calling the accusations from Niger’s government “groundless” and inconsistent with reality.

Broader Implications

Ukraine, engaged in a protracted conflict with Russia, seeks international support, especially from the Global South. The decision by Niger and Mali raises questions about potential geopolitical influences and security concerns. The ongoing violence and terrorist activities in these countries underscore the need for a balanced approach in their foreign policies. The challenge for Mali and Niger is to navigate their alliances carefully without compromising their security and stability. This evolving situation highlights the intricate dynamics of international diplomacy and regional alliances, reflecting broader geopolitical and security concerns.
