The National Union of Electricity Employees, (NUEE), has threatened to shut down the power sector if Joe Ajaero, the President of Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC is arrested.
This is coming after the Intelligence Response Team, (IRT) arm of the Nigerian Police Force, (NPF), had invited Ajaero on Monday, August 19, for questioning over Criminal Conspiracy, Terrorism Financing, Treasonable Felony, Subversion and Cybercrime.
The NUEE’s Acting General Secretary, Igwebike Dominic, had while reacting in a statement, said that the electricity union was utterly dismayed over the political machinations surrounding the police invitation of its General Secretary-cum-President of Nigeria Labour Congress – Comrade Joe Ajaero. The statement hinted that this was due to a purported fall out of the politically-motivated investigation into a now alleged trumped up charges of terrorism financing, cybercrime, subversion, criminal conspiracy and treasonable felony against him.
The statement further said that the choice by the Government to smother labour and free speech in the country was a tool to for Nigerians to continue to suffer in silence in the face of government policies that were not advantageous to the people was quite appalling and a flagrant abuse of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Finally, the NUEE called on their National, Zonal, State and Chapter leadership to begin immediate mobilization of their team members in Generation, Transmission and Distribution so they can immediately withdraw their services in the event that Comrade Joe Ajaero is detained.
