KRC Genk on Monday officially announced that Nigerian striker Paul Ebere Onuachu has committed to a contract extension which will see him remain at the Belgian side until June 2024.

In a statement on its website, Genk confirmed that it has been able to reach an agreement for a one-year contract extension with Onuachu which will keep the player at the club until the middle of 2024. The club said it is pleased to have Onuachu and express the hope that together they can achieve the set objectives.

This news comes a day after Onuachu scored a landmark 50th goal for Genk in the Limburg derby against St. Truiden, his third in successive games.

After a prolific season in which he plundered 35 goals, Onuachu was expected to make a big money move away from the modest Belgian side with Arsenal speculated as a possible destination at the end of last season but the leggy Nigerian opted to stay and has been on an inspired goalscoring form this season.

Last Sunday, he was on target as Genk forced a 1-1 home draw with visiting Union St. Gilloise and followed that up with the lone goal in the Europa League win away at Rapid Vienna on Thursday before scoring the winning goal in the  comeback win at St. Truiden bringing his total for the season to six.

The 27-year old made his debut on September 1, 2019 for KRC Genk after signing from Denmark’s Midtjylland and went on to score 10 times that season. However, in his second season, Onuachu’s rich form of goals saw him scoring a staggering 35 goals to win the topscorer award as well as being voted as the ‘Professional Footballer of the Year’.”

Onuachu has now scored 42 goals in his last 51 games for Genk and is a first team member of the Nigerian national team which is currently in the hunt for a 2022 World Cup ticket.
