Seun Kuti Clarifies: Fela’s Struggle Was Against Nigeria’s Wealthy Class
Share on FacebookShare on TwitterShare on Whatsapp

Seun Kuti, a budding Afrobeat musician, has come out in the open to clear his father Fela Anikulapo-Kuti’s name, pointing out that Fela did not fight the Nigerian government as people like to put it but the wealthy elite in Nigeria.

Seun gave an insight to this during his recent interview on the ‘Zero Conditions’ podcast. He pointed out that most of the music Fela composed was directed at the rich rather than the government.

He pointed to songs like ‘Lady,’ ‘Swegbe and Akpako,’ and ‘Ikoyi Blindness’ as examples of Fela’s opposition to the wealthy class. According to Seun, this opposition compelled the rich to align themselves with the government thus using deceit and propaganda to justify the physical attacks on Fela.
