The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) says over 30 people have died, leaving more than 400,000 unsettled due to the disastrous flood in Maiduguri, the Borno state capital. This was according to its spokesperson, Manzo Ezekiel.
On Tuesday, thousands of residents abandoned their homes as flood inundated swathes of Fori, Galtimari, Gwange, and Bulabulin areas of Maiduguri.
The flood had come about due to the collapse of the Alau Dam which has been at full capacity for the past week.
Already, the Borno state government has opened up an internally displaced persons (IDP) camps for affected victims across the state.
The incident has elicited widespread sympathy for the residents of the state.
The NEMA spokesperson, Ezekiel had further revealed that over 100,000 people were currently in various IDP camps, adding that the agency was collaborating with stakeholders to support the victims by safely returning them to their homes after the flood ebbs.
Additionally, the North-East Development Commission (NEDC) had made promises to partner with government agencies to provide relief to those affected by the flood.
