Israel’s UN Ambassador Danny Danon stated at the UNGA on Tuesday that Israel is open to ideas for de-escalating the conflict in Lebanon, aligning with the United States mention of “concrete ideas” being explored with allies. Danon emphasized that Israel is not eager for war and prefers a diplomatic solution: “We are open-minded for that… We prefer a diplomatic solution.”

Recent fighting between Israel and Hezbollah has heightened fears of a broader conflict in the Middle East, already impacted by the ongoing war between Hamas and Israel in Gaza.

The Israeli government in the past weeks has shifted focus to the north with an objective to ensure that displaced residents due to Hezbollah strikes on northern isreal are able to return safely. Hezbollah has been launching rockets in support of Hamas since the war in Gaza, leading to approximately 70,000 displaced residents.

A senior State Department official indicated that the U.S. is discussing “concrete ideas” with allies to prevent further escalation.

Danon reiterated that Israel is seriously considering “concrete ideas and proposals” being discussed with its strongest ally. He also stated, “It’s not too late for the Lebanese government… to pressure Hezbollah to stop their aggression.” He concluded that if Hezbollah ceases fire, residents could return to their communities. When asked about specific discussions, Danon refrained from providing details.
