Nigeria’s need for imported petrol has gone down a lot in October, courtesy of the Dangote Refinery increased production. A report from S&P Global Commodity Insights, which tracks ships, shows that petrol imports dropped a lot in the first two weeks of October.

The report says that only 280,400 barrels of gasoline and blend stock were brought into Nigeria in the first week of October, which ended on the 6th. This is a big drop from the average of 1.3 million barrels per week in August.

In the week ending October 13, only one ship brought gasoline to Nigeria, carrying 290,567 barrels from Antwerp to Lagos. These two shipments in October are much smaller than the 12 shipments in the first half of August and September.

Since October 8, no more gasoline shipments have come into Nigeria. The report shows that this drop in imports is the first time there has been a break in the usual flow of petrol into the country.
