In a surprise turn of events, Miami Beach has voted unanimously to rescind the Key to the City given to rapper and hip-hop mogul Diddy amidst recent legal fights and controversies about him. The vote, spearheaded by Mayor Steven Meiner of Miami Beach, was taken last week in an in-person hearing that finally marked the formal severing of ties with the rapper.

In 2015, P. Diddy was given the Key to the City in honor of his power in the music world; he hosted the Revolt Music Conference in Miami Beach, uniting artists, industry leaders, and fans. This seemed to be one more award acknowledging his effects on and contributions to the culture of the city.
But city officials decided to sever ties with him after a spate of recent lawsuits and charges filed against him. “The decision reflects our commitment to uphold the integrity of our city’s honors,” said Mayor Meiner.
