Nigeria were shocked 2-1 by Rwanda in their final 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON qualifying match at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo. Despite Samuel Chukwueze’s stunning opener, the Super Eagles fell apart as the Amavubis dramatically turned the tables to record their first ever win over the three-time African champions.
Already assured of qualification to AFCON, coach Augustine Eguavoen made seven changes to the lineup that drew 1-1 against Benin Republic. Star forwards Victor Osimhen and midfielder Wilfred Ndidi were rested, while Victor Boniface and Bright Osayi-Samuel were among those handed starting opportunities.
Kelechi Iheanacho did have perhaps the best Super Eagles chance, but his effort was denied by Rwanda’s goalkeeper as the Super Eagles struggled to assert themselves in the first half.
In the second half, substitute Chukwueze provided a moment of brilliance in the 61st minute, beating defenders before firing home to put Nigeria ahead, but defensive lapses let Rwanda equalize through a powerful Thierry Mutsinzi header in the 73rd minute. Three minutes later, Jacques Nshuti completed the stunning turnaround with a clinical finish on the counterattack.
Despite late substitutions, Nigeria failed to respond as they ended their qualifying campaign with a disappointing loss. Rwanda, however, fell short of AFCON qualification.
